Sometimes you're looking for a movie on-- let's say MiniNova. You find the movie, but there a lot of different versions to choose from. Some of them have the word DVDRIP in the movie name while others may have the word CAM or even TELESYNC. This guide will give you a brief idea of each of these tags and what they mean.
CAM
A cam rip is usually a movie captured illegally at a cinema using a digital camera or mobile phone. In most cases, a tripod is used to keep the camera steady. Usually, in cam rips, there is some noise interference ex. clapping, laughing, shouting etc. As the name says, these rips are usually the lowest quality rips and I don't recommend downloading them unless you're desperate.
TELESYNC (TS)
Telesync rips are pretty much the same as cam rips but with one difference; the use of an external audio source such as a microphone jack. These type of rips are usually more professional and can be captured from inside a noise-proof booth. In most cases, telesync rips have no or little noise interference. Like cam rips, I don't recommend downloading these either.
TELECINE (TC)
A telecine machine digitally copies the film off the reels. Sound and picture are usually excellent, but due to the expensive equipment involved, telecine rips are uncommon nowadays.
SCREENER (SCR)
A pre VHS tape that is usually sent to rental stores and various other places for promotional uses. Perfect, right? Wrong. These screeners usually have a stream of text that can be seen at the bottom of the screen and this text usually says "for promotional use only". The quality in a screener varies; if the tape was originally ripped from a master copy of the film , the quality can be very good, but if ripped from a normal copy, the quality can be as bad as a cam rip.
DVD SCREENER (DVDSCR)
Same concept as a VHS screener, but ripped over from a DVD instead. These type of rips are usually 4:3 letterbox, and the quality of the rip mostly depends on the ripper.
DVDRIP
A dvdrip is the final release of the film, and is usually in excellent quality. These rips are usually released in XviD/DivX format. I recommend downloading only DVDRIPs.
VHSRIP
Transferred off a retail VHS tape, usually skating/sports videos.
TVRIP
These type of rips are mainly shows ripped of satellite receivers (like Humax) or off TV Tuner cards. Most tv rip releases are TV Shows.
Scene Movie Release Tags
The following tags are used for scene releases, and can be seen in many torrents nowadays.
PROPER
Usually the best quality TS rip (you should know what that means by now) in the scene. The reason for a PROPER release is usually noted in the NFO.
LIMITED
This means that the movie was generally opened in 250 movie theaters or less.
STV (Straight to Video)
This shows that the movie was never showed in theaters, therefore a lot of sites don't allow these rips.
ASPECT RATIO TAGS
WS = WideScreen FS = FullScreen
REPACK
Is a re-release of a movie by a movie group. This usually means that the previous version had quality issues, so it is re-released.
That's all you have to know! If you know these tags, you'll be sure to know which version to download next time you search for you favorite movie!!! Don't forget to always check back for more great tutorials and guides on P2P Heaven!
